Wait and See

The 2nd Team’s win against Wanstead 4 meant they went top of Division 4 and are champions by the single point. A fantastic result in a tough division. Again, like the A-team match it was a nervy tight game, which on the night ended with only a draw required in Benger’s game to win the match. He was a pawn up, in a good position though probably drawn and his opponent accepted a draw a few days later.

It is now a case of wait and see with the B Team as to whether or not they are champions of their division.Overall it has been a brilliant season which is impart to each team having a good core of players who could be mixed around so everyone got a game. Next season we want to introduce a 3rd team to the NECL, so any body fancy being a captain please make yourself known at the AGM!

Writtle beat Ilford to secure the 1st division title and retain the Essex League Championship. Writtle was setup by Ivor Smith in the 1980’s as a bridge between the Essex and NECL league. It mainly comprises of players from Chelmsford, but does include several other clubs. Writtle only meet for matches.

Jeff MacWain has the best record in the NECL with 100% 6/6. Bob Hammond was very close to bettering this with 7½ /8.

The loneliness of being board one can come at a price if you have to face some tough opposition for a whole season. Withams’ Paul Sagnella could only manage 5 draws and 5 losses and Andrew Salmon of Clacton scored a 6 draws and 3 losses. Will they want to play board one next year??

The Soviets are coming..........Thursday 12th June 08.

3. Malcolm Kingsley Endgame technique

Ironically one the moments was against the same opponent Gavin Strachan had his rubbish moment against in Rubbish Chess Moments 2. Malcolm two games in a row had a drawn position and after a rush of blood (usually happens when he reaches for his wallet) blundered them away.
